Easy
to use:
No manipulation is needed
during temperature descent
between seeding and
plunging.
Economical:
Cost is kept to a
minimum. The unit is
economical enough to have as a
back up freezer if you have an
electrical unit that you want
to keep using as your primary
unit. However, most
times it is used as a primary
unit.
Accurate:
By using aluminum with
properly spaced chambers for
the straws, the temperature
differential between the top
of the unit and the embryo
level can be kept at a minimum
so as to be
insignificant. Included with the
unit is a stabilizer
which I have designed.
The stabilizer can make minor
adjustments for
temperature. It also
helps hold a precise seeding
temperature for as long as
necessary by keeping the
effect of the ambient
temperature and humidity at a
minimum.
Reliable:
Because of the unit's
simplicity, there is a high
degree of reliability.
If the thermocouple you use is
not working properly, you can
freeze with a simple $8.00
thermometer. I usually
use both simultaneously to
double check the temperature
during every phase, although I
have used just a thermometer
and it works fine.
Therefore, it is not necessary
to rely on either electric
current or a thermocouple with
this system.
Versatile:
You can use either the air or
alcohol method of freezing
with this unit. There
are two sizes of freezers to
accommodate several different
nitrogen tank measurements,
including shippers and
standard semen storage
tanks. Included with the
basic unit is an extender
block, which is useful for
height adjustment in different
tanks.
Large
Capacity:
It is important to have a large capacity
for straws, especially if freezing for
direct transfer. My large tank
freezers have a capacity of over 100 (1/4cc)
straws. The shipper
freezers are necessarily
smaller and have a capacity of
about 75 (1/4cc) straws.
These units can also be used
to freeze 1/2cc
straws.
